Central heat pump: installation, maintenance and repair

Heat Pumps

So you finally decided to invest in a heat pump? With all the subsidies available from the Quebec government and with the many advantages this device has to offer (energy savings and lower heating costs, reduced environmental impact), your choice is well worth it! Here are a few tips on how to choose your new air conditioning and heating system:

a. Finding a good air conditioning contractor

No matter how efficient this system is, it is very important to get advice from a specialist before choosing your heat pump. He or she will know the particularities of your home (residential area, insulation and waterproofing of the walls and ceiling, surface area of the rooms, heating system in place) and your specific needs (air conditioning, aesthetics, budget). He can then suggest the heat pump that best suits your expectations.

b. Proper installation of the central heat pump

Once the right heat pump has been chosen, it can be installed. Again, the installation must be done carefully, and in accordance with all industry standards. If the house already has ventilation ducts, this installation will be quick and hassle-free. If your house is new, or you wish to replace an old heating system, know that the work will take longer and be more costly. Whatever the case, be sure to use a certified technician who is a member of the professional associations for the field.

c. Annual maintenance of the air conditioning and heating system

For maximum life expectancy and high performance in air conditioning and/or heating, it is recommended to check the operating condition of the heat pump once a year, and to perform minor maintenance: clean the outdoor unit, wash the coil, check the air ducts and the condition of the fan. Contact your air conditioning contractor, and a technician will check all the components of your heating system (compressor, condenser, fan, coil) and intervene as needed to optimize its operation.

d. The right steps to take for repairs

Even though heat pumps are durable appliances, improper installation or settings can lead to malfunctions. Once you notice that your air conditioning or heating system is no longer performing as expected, the first step is to try to identify the cause. You can inspect the outdoor unit and filters and, if necessary, clean or replace them. If, however, you are unable to identify the source of the failure, do not hesitate to call a specialist. He or she has both the expertise and the tools for troubleshooting. Usually, the air conditioning contractor who installed the unit will also be able to help you in the event of a breakdown.
