Why switch to geothermal energy?

Geothermal

When it comes to the comfort of our home, we always want to know how to take advantage of the latest innovations and at the same time contribute to reducing the impact of our activities on the environment.

Heating remains the most important concern of homeowners in Quebec, and conventional heating systems vary from gas or wood heating to electric or fuel oil heating. More or less expensive, these systems are losing ground in favour of more modern, renewable energy technologies. Geothermal energy is one of them.

How does the geothermal system work?

One of the many properties of soil that we can benefit from is its ability to store heat (around 10° C, in Quebec), even at depths of just a few meters. What a geothermal system manages to do is capture this heat and direct it inside the home. To do this, a circuit of underground sensors (a network of pipes in which circulates a liquid that can be heated) is connected to a heat pump which transfers this heat to the house through a distribution system. And the same geothermal heat pump can operate in cooling mode in the summer, by reversing the process.

Why choose a geothermal heat pump?

Here are some of the main advantages of the geothermal system:

  • Durability
Although the initial investment is significant, the choice of a geothermal system ensures optimal comfort for a period that varies from 25 to 50 years, while the life of conventional systems is half of this.
  • Multiple functionalities
Instead of having a heating system and an air conditioner, you can use the geothermal heat pump for both functions, and even to preheat water in a water heater. This way, the temperature in the home can be constant throughout the year, making it much easier to adapt to the changing seasons.
  • Reduction of heating costs
Given the simplicity of this system, the permanent availability of the heat source and the reduced consumption of electrical energy, heating bills will noticeably be lower. The costs of acquiring this system are high, but over time the installation of this heating alternative will have proven to be cost effective.
  • Viability and maintenance
Once installed, this system requires very little professional and costly maintenance, and almost never needs repair.
  • Eco-responsibility
Growing research and discussion about the impact each of us has on the environment are pushing us to make more responsible choices when it comes to the consumption of non-renewable resources. By purchasing a geothermal heat pump, we opt for renewable energy, for decades to come.Seek advice from an Allard & Emond specialist
