How to Prepare Your Furnace for Winter

As Montreal's harsh winters approach, ensuring your furnace is ready to handle months of continuous operation is critical. A well-maintained furnace not only keeps your family comfortable but also operates more efficiently, saving you money on energy bills.

The first step is to replace your air filter. A clogged filter restricts airflow, forcing your furnace to work harder and consume more energy. We recommend checking your filter monthly and replacing it every 1-3 months depending on usage and filter type.

Next, inspect your thermostat. If you're still using a manual thermostat, consider upgrading to a programmable or smart model. These devices can reduce your heating costs by up to 10% by automatically adjusting temperatures when you're asleep or away from home.

Check all your vents and registers throughout the house. Make sure none are blocked by furniture, curtains, or rugs. Blocked vents create pressure imbalances that reduce efficiency and can cause uneven heating.

Listen for unusual sounds when your furnace starts up. Banging, squealing, or rattling noises can indicate loose components, a failing blower motor, or ignition problems. Addressing these issues early prevents costly emergency repairs mid-winter.

Schedule a professional tune-up before the heating season begins. Our technicians will inspect the heat exchanger for cracks, test safety controls, clean burners, check gas connections, and ensure your system is running at peak efficiency. Most tune-ups take about an hour and can extend your furnace's lifespan by years.

Finally, check the area around your furnace. Keep at least three feet of clearance on all sides. Remove any stored items, chemicals, or flammable materials. Ensure the exhaust vent is clear and unobstructed.

Don't wait until the first cold snap to discover your furnace needs attention. Book your annual maintenance appointment today and enjoy peace of mind all winter long.
