How to determine heat pump efficiency

Increasingly common in Quebec homes, heat pumps are generating growing interest and offer ever more functions, to ensure optimal home comfort and energy savings.

In brief, heat pumps are simple systems that merely transfer heat from one place to another, using a duct system and refrigerant fluid: in winter, heat is moved indoors, but in summer, is transferred outdoors.

4 criteria for determining heat pump efficiency

CP is a number that rates heat pump efficiency, calculated as follows: divide the amount of heat trans-ferred by the heat pump by the amount of electricity consumed. A high CP for a heat pump is a good indication of the device’s efficiency.

This second efficiency measurement indicates a heat pump’s cooling capacity in standard conditions: 35°C outdoor temperature, 26°C indoor temperature and 50% humidity. EER indicates the ratio be-tween cooling capacity and electricity consumed. A high EER indicates good energy performance and thus energy savings on electricity.

The Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) measures heat pump efficiency in air conditioning mode under conditions deemed average for an air conditioning season: 28°C outdoor temperature and constant indoor temperature of approximately 20°C. Since 2015, all air conditioning devices sold must have an energy efficiency rating (SEER) exceeding 14.5.

Here is a line of heat pumps renowned for their efficiency and quality, sold by Allard & Emond :

Inconspicuous and quiet, Daikin wall-mounted heat pumps feature variable-speed compressors and Invert technology. Save with these heat pumps SEER rated at 20 and EER rated at 13!

WaterFurnace geothermal heat pumps are one of the world’s top-performing heating systems, as proven by a EER cooling rating of 41 and heating CP of 5.3. An even more attractive option is the Wa-terFurnace hydronic heat pump, a water-to-water system.

With a high Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating of SEER 15 to 18, Goodman products are very popular due to their efficiency and competitive prices.

Models designed by York, with SEER ratings up to 20, will be your ally in the battle to control energy use and costs. Your home comfort is assured at a lower cost.

With excellent efficiency both winter and summer, the Daikin central heat pump (SEER rated up to 20) is much more compact and quieter than normal heat pumps.
