Living in Quebec, whether it\u2019s in Montreal, Laval or Mont-Laurier, means having to acclimatize as well to hot as to cold. But God knows it can be very cold in winter! If we do not pay attention, we can end up with a salt bill from Hydro-Qu\u00e9bec because of our heating. Here are three mistakes to avoid at all costs!<\/span><\/p>\n

1) UNKNOWN LEAKS<\/h4>\n

There are several sources of heat loss that you should not ignore if you want to reduce your electricity consumption in the winter, without having to compromise on comfort. The first is windows. If they are old or if the house is old and working, it may very well be that they are not waterproof enough to prevent the cold from entering your home. Put your hand near your window and if you feel cold air, you must certainly seal it. You can caulk it or install a tight plastic film. It\u2019s not always aesthetic, but you can remedy the situation with nice thick curtains, which will also provide a second layer of insulation, keeping the heat inside when they are closed.<\/span><\/p>\n

Another source of escape is your home. Make sure in the fall that its closure is tight.<\/span><\/p>\n

2) BADLY MANAGED THERMOSTAT<\/h4>\n

You have a good heating system, with a fairly new programmable thermostat, so you think this article is not for you? Think again! If you do not make wise management of this thermostat, you could also boost your heating costs. A difference of 1 \u00b0 C in temperature or less can have a considerable impact on your bill, so be careful. Make sure you do not overheat the house by never exceeding 24 \u00b0 C. Set the temperature so that it drops during the day when you are at work and goes back for the evening. Be patient, put on a woolen jacket when you get home and allow time for the rooms to heat up, instead of raising the thermostat too much.<\/span><\/p>\n

3) A DIRTY FILTER<\/h4>\n

You have an excellent heating system with your heat pump, so you think you are safe from surprises? If you forget a crucial detail, you too will pay too much for your comfort. You must absolutely take care of your filter and make sure it is clean. If you find it engorged, replace it, it is inexpensive and easy to do.
